I don't disagree with you. I looked at a bunch of more usual fonts for covers, blocky styles, but they really seemed to clash with the flowing nature of the artwork, so I took the chance of using a more script-like style.
The reality, I figure, is that the cover is never going to be seen in isolation. When you look on Amazon, you see the title on the page right next to or underneath the cover itself in every view I've been able to find. A lot of professional covers also have text that is difficult to read at different sizes. So I decided to go this route.
The illustration is gorgeous. I'm not sure the text quite works with it, though. The author name is fine, but there's something about the title text that is bothering me. Like it's not the right size/font or its placement is off or something.
It is lovely artwork, and ITA about the author name looking very fine. I could deconstruct what I think is going on with the Mortis Unbound part, but that might be a little rude. I think it could be improved with only some minor tweaking.
White type and black type have different visual weights. So the "Unbound" ends up looking thinner than "Mortis", even though they're actually the same size. Most likely part of the point of making the title two different colors was to keep either word from being devoured by the background, since the white "Mortis" is on a darker section of the background than "Unbound". The apparent difference is just enough to snag the eye, but not enough to look totally "wrong" or look like an intentional size difference.
Hopefully that's helpful and not desperately nitpicky sounding. :)
Oh wow, yes. That is very helpful, thank you! I honestly don't think this kind of thing is nitpicky or rude, tbh. I would rather know what is nagging people so I can understand and then either change it or knowingly choose not to change it. That's a lot of the reason I post these kinds of things, anyway - so I can see people's reactions.
