What I'm Into: Don't Starve

Last few weeks, I've been really into a new video game (new to me) called Don't Starve. It's an indie game, available on Steam, and has a few bits of DLC you can get that enhance or significantly change the gameplay.

Don't Starve is a survival game. You start off alone in the wilderness, and you have to gather resources and make sure to keep the lights on at night or you'll go mad or get eaten in the pitch darkness. Strange and fantastical - and exceptionally dangerous - monsters abound, and gathering edible foodstuffs really is a significant challenge! The artwork is sort of gothic and really charming.

It's not an easy game. A few weeks ago I basically ragequit. I don't usually like games where you can die really easily - and when you die, it's permadeath, you have to start over. But I still found myself gravitating towards watching other people play the game on youtube, and after taking that break, I kept finding myself wanting to play again.

Now I actually feel like I'm doing well with the game, and given how difficult I know it is, that comes with a massive sense of accomplishment.

I really recommend it. It's not terribly expensive, and it's a lot of fun. I do recommend either being very philosophical about dying (it IS expected) and keep trying, or reading up about the game after you start to feel frustrated, to get some tips.
