I think in Canada it's the same as in the US for getting published, particularly since I think most Canadians would just submit to a US publisher, rather than going with a Canadian publisher. It makes more sense, because Canada is 1/10 the market of the US, and most US books get sold in Canada, too, so there's no downside. But I think we're in a bit of a unique situation, being so close geographically and legally to the US.

He is doing a series of episodes all this year designed to give people a step-by-step how-to on self-publishing, and I'm learning a lot from it - including many things that made it into this post.
